Explanation

The Disney Animation Art presented here is the original drawing, background painting and computer graphics created by Disney artists for the Disney animation movie “Tarzan “. In the case of the 101 Dalmatians created in 1961, since the cells were produced by Xerox, the original cells drawn by animators no longer exist.

Many Walt Disney original art collectors from around the world expressed their desire to obtain the original cells used in the new animation movies. In response to these requests, Disney sold the background pieces used in the production of the movie from "Beauty and the Beast" released in 1991 to collectors around the world at Sotheby's Auction.

The auction was held at the El Capitan Theater, a famous theater in Hollywood, and the auction was so crazy that prices were more than four times the estimated prices. The original Tarzan painting this time is lot number 34, and it is a valuable work that is in the frame as it appeared in the auction and the certificate is attached.

Rarity of the cell original

Walt Disney's animated films have captivated children and adults around the world across racial, religious and national boundaries, and continue to do so. Disney artists took the time to recreate the movements of the animals, sometimes bringing real deer into the studio to capture their movements and using them to make Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs movie and Bambi movies.

Also, it is said that about 14~16 cells were drawn in 1 second for ordinary animation movies, but Disney animators drew 24 cells in 1 second for Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, which makes the motion so smooth. It is said that as many as 1.8 million cells were drawn in order to make a single Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs movie, but the number that exists now is very small.

There were two reasons for this. The cells that were drawn for film production were made of acetate, so they were discarded because there was a risk that they would spontaneously ignite if they were stacked and stored in a warehouse or studio. At the time, Disney's policy was to erase a large number of cells and send them to the next production, so they did not survive.

Moreover, it is estimated that there are 200 hand painted backgrounds that were drawn for each Disney animation film production.

The most valuable original cell is called Key Master Background, and it is a work in which cells and hand painted background appear in movies as they are, and it is an extremely rare and valuable work, and it is estimated that there are less than 20 setups in each movie based on past auction records.

The next rarer work is called the Production background work, in which the cells and background were used for actual filmmaking, but the scenes did not appear in the film. In the 1940s, Walt Disney Co. gave a combination of a background picture and a cell which was in the studio as a souvenir for Walt Disney's guests, and these were mainly the production background works and it is estimated that the number of each work is about 100 to 150 existence. Then there's the Courvoisier piece, and the cells were used in the making of the film but the background were airbrush background joint reproduction by the Courvoisier Gallery in San Francisco in 1940’s with Disney. (Among them, Disney rarely supplied hand-drawn background used during the production of the movie to the Courvoisier Gallery and sold them to the public.)

It is estimated that 300 to 500 pieces of Snow White and seven Dwarfs, mainly of Dwarfs, and 200 to 300 pieces of Fantasia, Pinocchio, Dumbo and Bambi are still in existence, but the Dumbo (1941) and Bambi (1942) were in the middle of World WarⅡat that time and paint materials were not good enough to paint celluloid, so they were brittle in material and almost no cell remain in their original state

As mentioned above, it is estimated that there are less than 2,000 cell pieces in total for the 5 major classic movies from Snow White and seven Dwarfs to Bambi. Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland , Peter Pan, Lady & the Trump , Sleeping Beauty, 101 Dalmatians , Jungle Book, The Aristocats, Winnie the Pooh had been sold at Disneyland as a souvenir and other places, and there are relatively many of them, but it is estimated that there are only a few thousand of them existence. But those Disney land piece has no background or come with printed background. Animation is now popular worldwide, but its origins are Disney animated films, and Disney originals are a part of it, and to own it is to own a piece of history
